Ongoing Advocacy

Since 2009 ILS has conducted advocacy across a number of areas in order to protect and promote the human rights of people with disabilities to live independently in the community. The advocacy focuses on the development and implementation national and international conventions, treaties, laws, legislation and policies.

ILS is also involved in a number of campaigns. Find out more on events and campaigns here.

Inclusive Education

People with any disability have the right to complete an education in any school, university, college or other educational institution. These institutions need be completely accessible, have the necessary equipment to support students and staff to learn, have staff who are trained to teach people with disabilities and, where necessary, have an adjusted or specifically designed curriculum and education materials developed.

Employment Opportunities

Increased awareness and accessible working environments are needed to allow people with disabilities to undertake a greater variety of employment in both the public and private sectors. People with disabilities can be just and motivated and capable of working as anyone else. In many cases workplaces would require minimal, or no, change to accommodate people with disabilities. Employing people with disabilities would also relieve financial pressure on families and allow them to live a more independent life.

Accessible Environment

Physical barriers at work, schools, government buildings, public buildings, homes, construction zones and transport restrict or prevent people from living, learning and traveling independently all across Nepal. Guidelines need to be developed and enforced to ensure that accessible environments are designed and built. This will help to ensure that everyone is capable of living, traveling, learning and working in as independently as possible.

Rights to Assistive Devices and Services

Rights to Assistive Devices and Services

People with disabilities often require assistive devices, like wheelchairs, or personal attendants to allow them to perform regular activities like travel, shopping or going to work. Wheelchairs and other assistive devices should be made easily and freely available to those who need them when they need them. Trained and qualified personal attendants should be readily available to those who need them when they need them.

Free Health Care

Free Health Care

Health care and counseling services should be made free and easily accessible to people with disabilities across Nepal who require regular and on-going medical treatment or medication. Free and accessible medical treatment is a basic right of people with disabilities.

Disability Allowance

Disability Allowance

Some people, because of their disability, are unable to work and support themselves. In such circumstances the government should provide adequate support to allow them to live comfortably and as independently as possible. Government support should include accessible accommodation, an allowance to cover food, living, transportation costs and, when necessary, a trained personal attendant. Families should not have to cover the financial stresses involved in such situations.
